  • How is counselling different from talking to a friend or family member?

Although it is valuable to have friends and family to talk too, a counsellor is impartial, a stranger to your history and interested in helping you maintain healthy mental health. Friends and family can have their own concerns and only be able to help so much and so unable to provide impartial guidance. A counsellor’s concern is your therapeutic wellbeing and I have skills and techniques to apply during the therapeutic process to help you on your way to better mental health. Counsellors are specially trained to handle other’s distress and thus it does not become a burden. Friendships or family members history with you or with the presenting issue can be influential in not being non-judgemental or providing impartial guidance. In counselling you will experience a non-judgemental environment with empathy and genuine professional help.

  • How will you relate to what I am going through?

Each individual’s blueprint is unique, by using professional therapeutic techniques and models I can appreciate your struggles and have the skills to be able to help you on your road to recovery towards balanced wellbeing. Not having gone through exactly what you may have or are does not mean I would not know how to help. My training and skills allow me to work with you, I will be open-minded and importantly I will not be providing ‘advice’ or ‘telling you what to do’. The therapeutic relationship ultimately will enable you to eventually seek your path in an autonomous way. The client normally always knows what they want – they may just need some help during the process to help think clearly or getting through the presenting issue. I may be the mental health professional, though you the client is the expert on yourself. So, we work together therapeutically to help you along your process.
